THE ARCHITECTURE

In 2018, the local owners commissioned Tasmanian architects Bence-Mulcahy to design a contemporary extension.

They wanted a thoroughly modern home which would respect the history and Tasmanian context of the heritage cottage.

Awards & Acknowledgements

  • The cottage was restored by local craftsmen, and the extension was built by Thylacine Constructions. Set within the garden, it is smaller in scale than the cottage, to protect views of the Fusilier Cottage from Hampden Road and Waterloo Crescent.

  • Winner of State and national Australian Institute of Architects Awards in 2022, and featured in the annual Open House Hobart program, the facade of the new garden room gives occupants the option to remain private or to open their home to bustling Battery Point.

  • Oversized sliding glass doors and timber screens can be used in various combinations to change how the cottage interacts with the street and garden.

  • Bluestone flooring, finely detailed Tasmanian timbers, and a sensitive colour palette compliment Fusilier Cottage’s original bluestone.

  • Interiors are lined with shiplap eucalypt, and the external screens are crafted from unique Hydro wood, rescued from the floor of Lake Murchison in Tasmania’s remote West Coast, where the timber had been submerged for forty years.
