Fusilier Cottage, award-winning architecture in the historic heart of Hobart

2022 was a big year for Fusilier Cottage, and for our award-winning architects, Bence-Mulcahy.

On June 11, Bence-Mulcahy picked up two state awards at the Tasmanian architects’ award night: an award for heritage architecture, and one for residential architecture - houses (alteratons and additions). The architects then went on to win a ‘people’s choice’ award for Fusilier Cottage. Australian Institute of Architects - Australian Institute of Architects State Award 2022.

Not long after this, the cottage was recognized with a national award. Fusilier Cottage won the heritage category of the Houses Magazine awards. Sophie Bence was in Melbourne on 29th July to receive the award. Houses Awards 2022.

But the big one came at the Australian Institute of Architects 2022 National Award night on 3rd November, 2022.

The architects, Shamus Mulcahy and Sophie Bence, attended the event in Sydney, with our builder, James Heyward from Thylacine Constructions and his lovely wife, Sarah. What a night! Fusilier Cottage was recognized with a national award for residential architecture - houses (alterations and additions). It doesn’t get much better than this for a young architectural firm from Tasmania.

As the evening unfolded, we watched on a live YouTube link from the deck of The Studio our second home in Lombok, Indonesia. The sun set over the Lombok Strait, there was a joyful exchange of WhatsApp messages, and our wonderful cottage in Tasmania was recognized for its outstanding contemporary architecture.

On a return trip to Tasmania, Sopan and I met with Shamus and, over a cup of coffee at the café near their North Hobart office, we picked up the awards, which now hang proudly in the entrance foyer to Fusilier Cottage.

Congratulations to Bence Mulcahy, congratulations to Thylacine Constructions, and congratulations to Fusilier Cottage!
